LEARNING INTEGRITY INSIGHTS

What the latest Turnitin insights tell us about AI

What Is AI Changing About Academic Integrity?

The academic integrity conversation is changing.

As generative AI becomes increasingly embedded in education, institutions are having to consider more than whether students are using AI. Questions around how AI is being used, what responsible use looks like and how educators can maintain confidence in authentic student learning are becoming equally important.

Turnitin’s latest Learning Integrity Insights examines these changing patterns.

Its Q2 2026 findings indicate that AI-writing behaviour varies according to geography and education level. Turnitin also reports growing demand among educators for education-specific AI tools that provide visibility into how students use AI and fit meaningfully into teaching and assessment practices. What does this mean for educators?

AI detection remains one part of the academic integrity toolkit, but institutions may increasingly need to look at the broader learning process.

Instead of asking only:

“Did this student use AI?”

there is value in also asking:

“How was AI used, was that use appropriate for this assessment, and what evidence do we have of the student’s learning?”

That shifts the conversation from policing technology towards building assessment practices that encourage transparency, responsible AI use and authentic learning.
